WHAT IF...? self evaluation

What problem did you identify?

That men get dragged around shopping with their partner/friend, and there is nothing they can do whilst shopping.

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?

(Primary) We spoke to shoppers around leeds, and their male partner. Also, spoke to male friends/family for their opinions.
(Secondary) Looked on the internet.
(Qualitative) Got opinions from males and also the shop assistants working in the store.
(Quantitative) We counted how many couples were in the store and how many men there were.

What methods did you use to gather your evidence and what forms did it take?

Questionnaire for males, to see what they would want/ what they are interested in.

What methods of research did you find useful and why?

Questionnaire was quite useful, though was sometimes difficult to get answer, as they didn't have time to stop and talk.

How did these inform your response to your problem?

From the results, it showed that males wanted something to do whilst they were shopping, so we came up with something they could read that would be funny and entertaining, as this was shown to be what the male audience wanted.

What methods did you encounter as problematic?

Getting opinions from the men in town, as they were busy doing something, or needed to be somewhere.

How did you overcome this?

Asked males when they were not with their partner (when they were with mates) - not in the shopping area.

What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?

I think more opinions and information about what a man finds interesting and wants to read or look at would have developed our idea more.
Also, our quantitative research could have been looked into much more, by looking into more stores to see where 'couples' go.

List 5 things that you have learnt about the design process:
  • Found it quite difficult to work with the public. Needed to find a better way to get answers from them.

List 5 things you would do different next time:
  • Make sure that everyone has something to do.
  • Split up more. Go in different directions to find different, but relevant information, so there would be more to work with.

END OF MODULE- self evaluation:

1. WHAT PRACTICAL SKILLS HAVE YOU DEVELOPED THROUGH THIS MODUL AND HOW EFFECTIVELY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE APPLIED THEM?

I have improved greatly on illustrator, as I have never really used it before. There is a better understanding of how to use the programme and how to use it to its strengths.
In many pieces of work I have produced, illustrator is used.

2. WHAT APPROACHES TO/METHODS OF PROBLEM SOLVING HAVE YOU DEVELOPED AND HOW HAVE THEY INFORMED YOUR DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND PROCESS?

From drawing out ideas and trying different ways of laying out, or changing colours etc... I find that my work can be improved upon and solve different problems that have come about.
Getting a variety of quick ideas also helps. Visual langage has helped me develope these skills.

3. WHAT STRENGTHS CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR WORK AND HOW HAVE/WILL YOU CAPITALISE ON THESE?

I think the greatest strength in my work varies. In some cases, I think I have been able to put down a few visual ideas and get research to help me progress. In other pieces, I have managed to keep the brief going, and I'm motivated to try out more possibilites to find a better outcome, or find other ways of doing it.
I think I need to be able to do this to all the work i produce, as doing so would make my final product better.

4. WHAT WEAKNESSES CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR WORK AND HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THESE MORE FULLY?

Especially in my sketchbook, I have realised that in some cases, there is not alot of ideas put down on paper. I think that if I put my basic ideas down on paper, then it would be easier to work on them and improve them more. Also, I think a bit more trial and error is needed, as it seems as though I usually settle for the first or second idea.

5. IDENTIFY FIVE THINGS THAT YOU WILL DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME AND WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO GAIN FROM DOING THESE?

1. Keep up to date with my blog context, as this will make me look at more designers and their work, which will inspire me and perhaps motivate me to do better work.
2. Get more ideas down on paper when working on a brief.
3. Spend more time on work thats been on illustrator, making sure it's upto scratch.
4. Get to the library more, and get books. Haven't really used it as much as I should be, and I think it would improve my work and knowledge much more.
